Jonny Heeley
"Amazing", "inspirational" and "outstanding" are just a few phrases that have been used to describe this modern-day Johnny Ball. One viewer of his Teachers' TV maths masterclasses even went so far as to describe him as "More inspirational than Marcus de Sautoy!"
This maths teacher's maths teacher is a former Secondary Teacher of the Year for the North and is currently Head of department at Rawthorpe High School in Leeds, a school serving a socially deprived area, with five times the national average of free schools meals pupils. Since Jonny arrived there he has overseen a rise in standards from 12% A - C passes in 2002 to 50% A - Cs today.
Jonny is a maths-mad-monomaniac. "I have," he says, "And have always been passionate about maths and anything to do with maths." It is this passion, along with Jonny's spectacular and livid version of creativity that makes him one of the country's most outstandingly exciting and effective practitioners.
